Using a Moodboard for Decorating
If you’re planning to decorate, gathering samples and ideas of inspiration and placing them in a display is a good idea. By doing this you are able to see and touch your inspiration.
Your moodboard can be made in a variety of ways. The first way is by using a pinboard, often made of cork which you hang or rest against a wall. Start by collecting pictures, photocopies and magazine images that speak to you. Physical samples also need to be collected including paint samples, fabric samples and any other lightweight objects of inspiration. This type of moodboard is made for layering. It enables you to play and move your samples and pictures around to see what works together and what you like. This board can also be a beautiful wall display on which you can project your decorating vision for a specific space in your home.
Your moodboard can be made in a scrapbook. You would need thick pages, glue, double sided tape, paper clips and envelopes. You might like to start with a colour scheme and create a mood around it. Gather images and physical samples and decide what looks good together before sticking them to the page. Spare samples can be placed in an envelope which can be glued to the page. A scrapbook can be added to as your decorating ideas grow and is portable enough to take to showrooms.
When planning to decorate an area such as a kitchen where many samples are solid, you might like to try making your moodboard on a tray with raised edges. If you start collecting samples of flooring, tiles, paint, benchtops, cabinetry, splashbacks and fixtures, a tray is the ideal surface on which to play and arrange samples to achieve your desired look. The beauty of this moodboard, is that it is portable as well as being a vessel for carrying samples.
